Not every ending announces itself.

I've come to understand that not every connection is meant to last forever. Some people are placed in your path to walk beside you for a while, to teach something vital, to reflect something you needed to see. Then the rhythm changes. The harmony fades. The silence says what words won't.

That used to feel like loss. Now, it feels like completion.

We don't always get closure. Sometimes all we get is clarity. And I've learned that clarity, even when it arrives without ceremony, is its own kind of grace.

There's something liberating about releasing a season without bitterness. About honoring what was without forcing what no longer fits. The people who shaped you were part of the composition that brought you here. Every exchange mattered. Every silence had something to teach.

“Between Sips” was born from something most of us have lived without ever naming. When drinks are shared between two people, rarely is one drink the thing that changes the evening.

When we're younger, growth often looks like addition.

We add commitments, possessions, goals, responsibilities, and experiences. We build careers, pursue opportunities, and fill our lives with the things we believe will move us forward. 

For a time, that's exactly what we're meant to do.

Adding teaches us. It helps us discover what matters, what doesn't, and who we're becoming along the way. But eventually, something changes.

The things we once pursued so eagerly begin to reveal their cost. Every commitment requires time. Every responsibility demands energy. Every yes leaves less room for something else.

That's when wisdom begins to ask a different question. 

Not, "What else can I add?" 

But, "What can I remove?"

It's a question that feels uncomfortable because we've spent so much of our lives building. Yet there comes a point when the next level of growth isn't found in adding more. It's found in creating space. Space to think, to rest, to be present, and to focus on what matters most.

As we get older, many of us realize that a full life and a fulfilled life are not always the same thing. One can leave us exhausted. The other leaves us nourished.

Perhaps that's why maturity often looks less like expansion and more like intention. More clarity. More freedom. More peace.

The goal is no longer to fill every space. It's to create room for what truly matters.

Most people don't know this, but Angela Bofill played a pivotal role in my career.

Back in the early 90s, I launched a television show on public broadcasting. The vision was simple: to spotlight independent artists who weren't receiving attention on the major platforms.

The challenge was that no one was watching.

The artists were talented, but they weren't well known. It didn't take long for me to realize that if I wanted people to tune in, I needed to give them a reason.

That reason arrived in the form of Angela Bofill.

At the time, Angela was already an established artist whose music had become the soundtrack to countless lives. When I learned she had agreed to sit down for an interview, I was thrilled.

What I remember most, though, wasn't her celebrity status. It was her warmth. She was gracious, funny, engaging, and generous with her time. We had a wonderful conversation, and when the interview aired, something unexpected happened.

People tuned in to see Angela.

Then they stayed.

Viewership grew. Record labels started calling. Publicists began reaching out. The doors began to open. Before long, I was interviewing a growing list of notable artists.
Looking back, Angela was the catalyst.

Years later, after launching Chayz Lounge Radio in 2009, I reached out to Angela for another interview. By then, she had suffered a second stroke. Life had changed dramatically for her, yet she graciously agreed and exuded the same warmth, kindness, and humor I remembered from years before.

And once again, people showed up.

When listeners heard Angela Bofill would be joining me, they tuned in. The audience grew, and the show gained momentum once again.

I used to joke that Angela was my lucky charm. The truth is, she was much more than that. She became part of two defining chapters in my journey.

At one point, I hoped to bring The Angela Bofill Experience to Columbia, South Carolina. Unfortunately, it never came to pass. Still, I was grateful for every conversation we shared. Each one left a lasting impression.

One exchange, in particular, has stayed with me over the years.

I asked Angela what message she'd like to leave with her fans. Her answer was simple.

"Love. All about love."

That's who Angela Bofill was. A gifted vocalist. A remarkable artist. And a woman whose kindness left an impression far beyond the stage.

I remember Angela Bofill with gratitude. Not only for the music, but for the unexpected role she played in helping shape my journey.

The kind of moment where the day has finally settled, the noise fades, and your mind slowly drifts toward memories, experiences, and reflections that still carry a pulse somewhere beneath the surface.

Not necessarily with sadness.

Just awareness.

While writing this piece, I found myself thinking about how certain moments never completely leave us. Conversations. Crossroads. The could-haves. The should-haves. The moments that never completely disappeared, but softened with time. Late at night, when everything slows down and the noise fades, something shifts.

I don’t know who needs to hear this… but we all deserve a round of applause for the way we tackle adulthood.

When I was much younger, I distinctly remember telling my sister, “I can’t wait to grow up.” What… exactly… was I thinking?

No one told me “growing up” meant waking up every day like,
“Wait… I’m in charge of this?” And by “this,” I mean everything.
The bills. The decisions.
The responsibility.
The remembering of things nobody reminds you to remember.

Let’s also talk about the confidence we had as kids. We really believed adulthood meant freedom. Do what you want. Go where you want. Be who you want.

Nobody mentioned the fine print.

The part where you have to make decisions all day, pay for everything you enjoy, and somehow still have energy left to be a functioning human being.

And don’t let you finally sit down. Because the moment you get comfortable, your brain whispers, “You forgot something.”

Now you’re negotiating. Is it important… or is it tomorrow’s problem? Be honest. Half the time, tomorrow wakes up with a to-do list it didn’t ask for.

And plans? Oh, we make them. “We should definitely go out.” And then the day arrives, and suddenly staying home feels like a well-thought-out life decision.

You start doing quiet calculations. How long will I be out? What’s the parking situation? Can I leave early without announcing it?

Because at this point, peace isn’t just a preference. It’s a priority. 

And somehow, in the middle of all of this, we’re still doing it. Still showing up. Still figuring it out. Still pretending we know exactly what we’re doing.

We don’t. But we are fully committed to the role.

So yes… round of applause.

Because being in charge of your entire life every single day, with no rehearsal, no manual, and no one coming to double-check your work… that deserves recognition.

Even if you’re still figuring it out… again.

There was a time in my life when love felt like a finish line. Something I needed to reach to feel complete.

I remember getting tired.
Tired of dating disappointments.
Tired of connections that looked right, but left me feeling drained.

So I did something many people do when they are ready for something real.

I got intentional.

I had read that if you visualize your dream partner, you can bring them into your life.
So I got specific. Very specific.

I wrote it all down.

The look. The height. The complexion.
Eyes that pulled you in.
A voice that could melt tension like butter on a jazz night.
Well mannered. Stylish. Effortlessly cool.

I had my blueprint. And like clockwork, the universe delivered.

Someone who checked every box. Every single one.

But there was one thing I didn’t ask for.

A good love.

And that changed everything.

Because while the physical was there, the heart was not. It didn’t know how to care for mine.

That experience shifted something in me. It made me realize something I had never fully understood before.

Not all love is good love.

Some love looks right, but feels wrong.
Some love starts strong, but cannot sustain.
Some love asks you to shrink, to adjust, to perform.

And then there is a different kind of love.

The kind that doesn’t arrive loudly.

Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Long before I ever wrote a line or stepped behind a microphone, music was already shaping how I felt, how I remembered moments, and how certain memories stayed with me.

One of the very first songs that left an imprint on me was Hey Jude. Even as a child, there was something about the sound and the emotion in that record that stayed with me. I didn’t fully understand it at the time, but I felt it.

Music has a way of doing that.

Some of my earliest memories are tied to songs. I remember my first childhood crush and the shy little kiss on the cheek that came with it, all while Betcha By Golly Wow by The Stylistics was playing. I remember the feeling of learning how to dance, and later teaching someone else how to dance, and how the music in those moments set the tone for everything that followed.

Music doesn’t just play in the background of our lives. It frames the moment. It colors the memory. It becomes the emotional thread that connects one chapter of life to another.

When I sat down to write Music Moves My Mood, I was thinking about all of those moments. The songs that shaped my memories. The way a melody can instantly transport you back to a particular place, a particular feeling, a particular person.
