Late at night, when everything slows down and the noise fades, something shifts.
The pressure lifts.
The expectations fall away.

That’s when my mind begins to open.

I’ve been this way for most of my life.
A night owl by nature.
While others are winding down, I’m just beginning to settle into myself.

The day is full.
Beautiful, but full.
It asks for your attention, your response, your energy.

But the night gives something back.

It gives stillness.
It gives clarity.
It gives room for thoughts to stretch out and breathe.

And somewhere between reflection and rest, ideas begin to rise.

Sometimes I’m lying there, trying to fall asleep…
and then a thought arrives.

Not loud.
Not urgent.
Just present.

And I’ve learned not to ignore it.

Because inspiration doesn’t follow a schedule.
It doesn’t wait until it’s convenient.
It doesn’t care about timing or structure.

It shows up when the world steps out of the way.

For me, that’s in the quiet…

Let’s also talk about the confidence we had as kids. We really believed adulthood meant freedom. Do what you want. Go where you want. Be who you want.

Nobody mentioned the fine print.

The part where you have to make decisions all day, pay for everything you enjoy, and somehow still have energy left to be a functioning human being.

And don’t let you finally sit down. Because the moment you get comfortable, your brain whispers, “You forgot something.”

Now you’re negotiating. Is it important… or is it tomorrow’s problem? Be honest. Half the time, tomorrow wakes up with a to-do list it didn’t ask for.

And plans? Oh, we make them. “We should definitely go out.” And then the day arrives, and suddenly staying home feels like a well-thought-out life decision.

You start doing quiet calculations. How long will I be out? What’s the parking situation? Can I leave early without announcing it?

Because at this point, peace isn’t just a preference. It’s a priority.

And somehow, in the middle of all of this, we’re still doing it. Still showing up. Still figuring it out. Still pretending we know exactly what we’re doing.

We don’t. But we are fully committed to the role.

So yes… round of applause.

Because being in charge of your entire life every single day, with no rehearsal, no manual, and no one coming to double-check your work… that deserves recognition.

Even if you’re still figuring it out… again.

There was a time in my life when love felt like a finish line. Something I needed to reach to feel complete.

I remember getting tired.
Tired of dating disappointments.
Tired of connections that looked right, but left me feeling drained.

So I did something many people do when they are ready for something real.

I got intentional.

I had read that if you visualize your dream partner, you can bring them into your life.
So I got specific. Very specific.

I wrote it all down.

The look. The height. The complexion.
Eyes that pulled you in.
A voice that could melt tension like butter on a jazz night.
Well mannered. Stylish. Effortlessly cool.

I had my blueprint. And like clockwork, the universe delivered.

Someone who checked every box. Every single one.

But there was one thing I didn’t ask for.

A good love.

And that changed everything.

Because while the physical was there, the heart was not. It didn’t know how to care for mine.

That experience shifted something in me. It made me realize something I had never fully understood before.

Not all love is good love.

Some love looks right, but feels wrong.
Some love starts strong, but cannot sustain.
Some love asks you to shrink, to adjust, to perform.

And then there is a different kind of love.

The kind that doesn’t arrive loudly.
The kind that doesn’t require you to chase it.

Music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Long before I ever wrote a line or stepped behind a microphone, music was already shaping how I felt, how I remembered moments, and how certain memories stayed with me.

One of the very first songs that left an imprint on me was Hey Jude. Even as a child, there was something about the sound and the emotion in that record that stayed with me. I didn’t fully understand it at the time, but I felt it.

Music has a way of doing that.

Some of my earliest memories are tied to songs. I remember my first childhood crush and the shy little kiss on the cheek that came with it, all while Betcha By Golly Wow by The Stylistics was playing. I remember the feeling of learning how to dance, and later teaching someone else how to dance, and how the music in those moments set the tone for everything that followed.

Music doesn’t just play in the background of our lives. It frames the moment. It colors the memory. It becomes the emotional thread that connects one chapter of life to another.

When I sat down to write Music Moves My Mood, I was thinking about all of those moments. The songs that shaped my memories. The way a melody can instantly transport you back to a particular place, a particular feeling, a particular person.

That’s what this piece is about.

It’s a reflection on how music doesn’t just accompany life.

Friday nights were everything.
The week ended, and the city opened its doors.

who was spinning the grooves that would carry us till morning.

Somewhere along the way,

The truth is, not all gifts are blessings. Some are tests. Can you still muster gratitude when the present itself feels like a practical joke? Can you rise to the occasion and pretend this hand-painted mug that says Live, Laugh, Lint Roll is exactly what you needed?

Maybe that’s the deeper meaning of the saying. It isn’t about horses at all. It’s about grace. The ability to nod, grin, and say “thank you” while quietly plotting where to stash the monstrosity. The closet? The donation bin? Re-gift roulette?

So the next time someone warns you not to look a gift horse in the mouth, just smile. After all, you’ll be the one saddled with it.

Then a spark breaks through. For me, it’s a photo of Brooklyn at twilight. A New York street alive with yellow cabs and the blur of strangers in motion. It pulls me back, and I can almost hear the rumble of the train beneath the pavement and the laughter spilling from a late night café. The sight stirs something ancient in me, a memory of movement, energy, the charge of possibility, and of life lived wide open.

Cities carry memories. They hold the ghosts of every dreamer who ever chased a vision and every story still unfolding. A single image can jolt my spirit awake, reminding me that the world is larger than the four walls of my routine.

When I sit with the feeling, I realize the urge may not be about a specific place at all. It’s my need for expansion, a call to stretch beyond the familiar. It’s an inner nudge for growth, a quiet invitation to step into something wider.

Maybe it’s my creative compass flickering. When the familiar starts to feel too settled, that flicker tells me there’s more. It doesn’t mean I have to pack boxes tomorrow. It might simply be prompting me to take a break from the norm, to rearrange my space, to seek a change of scenery that awakens a new rhythm, or to consider a longer journey when the timing aligns.

The city points the way and whispers, There’s more. In that whisper is a promise that stillness is temporary, change is always possible, and the next horizon is waiting for me to take the first step.

Somewhere in the world, there must be a secret society of socks. It’s the only explanation I can come up with. How else do we start with a matching pair and end up with one lonely survivor staring back at us from the laundry basket?

I picture them slipping away through some portal in the spin cycle, landing in a club where all the runaway socks hang out. The argyles are in the corner sipping cocktails, tube socks are showing off on the dance floor, and that one sequined sock you bought on a whim but never wore? She is probably running the place.

Meanwhile, back at home, I am left with the awkward task of folding a single sock. What am I supposed to do with it? Keep it in the hope its partner comes back from sabbatical? Throw it out and feel like a traitor? Or start a drawer full of mismatched pairs and call it fashion forward?

Then again, maybe socks are not vanishing at all. Maybe they are teaching us something. Things, and sometimes people, walk beside us for a season only to take their leave. The trick, I suppose, is not to dwell on the missing but to smile at the mystery. To let the gaps become gentle reminders that even in something as ordinary as laundry, there is room for wonder.

Maybe the point is not to chase what is gone, but to marvel at what remains. Even one sock can remind us that companionship existed, and sometimes that is enough.

This is more than a memory. It’s a tribute.

She was a model, yes. The first Black woman to grace the cover of Mademoiselle magazine in 1976. She was a restaurateur, opening doors to some of the most sophisticated dining spaces owned by a Black woman; in fact any woman! She was a lifestyle expert before that phrase was even common. She was a visionary. A trailblazer. A woman who saw herself clearly and moved through the world with purpose.

Before Martha Stewart became a household name, B. Smith was already living the blueprint. Setting tables with intention. Designing homes with grace. Hosting television programs that welcomed viewers into a world where style met soul. She did all of this in a time when Black women were still being told to stay in their lane. B. didn’t stay in any lane. She created her own path, carved it with class, and walked it with her head held high.

And yet, somehow, her name doesn’t come up enough.

That is what unsettles me.

Because B. Smith didn’t just build a brand. She built a bridge. One that carried culture, refinement, and excellence into the mainstream. She made space for the rest of us to dream bigger. And I believe we owe it to her and to ourselves to keep that memory alive.

I carry her spirit in my work. In every curated experience. In every intentional choice. In every reminder that elegance and authenticity can coexist. That Black women don’t have to choose between soul and sophistication. We can embody both. She did.

This isn’t just a story about the past. It’s a reminder for the present. A call to speak the names that history has tried to quiet. A promise that her light will not dim, not on my watch.

Before Martha, there was B.

• Born Barbara Elaine Smith on August 24, 1949, in Pennsylvania, she began her career as a model and became one of the first Black women to appear on the cover of Mademoiselle magazine in July 1976

• She later became a restaurateur, opening the first B. Smith restaurant in New York City in 1986. Two more locations followed in Washington D.C. and Sag Harbor, welcoming guests into warm, refined spaces that reflected her unique style

• Smith hosted the nationally syndicated TV show B. Smith with Style from 1997 to 2010, offering tips on home décor, cooking, and entertaining with her signature grace

• She published three books: B. Smith’s Entertaining and Cooking for Friends, B. Smith: Rituals and Celebrations, and Before I Forget, a courageous memoir co-written with her husband after she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s

• She once said,
  “Whatever you do, do it with style. And soul. Always soul.”

• B. Smith passed away on February 22, 2020, but her impact continues through the countless lives she touched and inspired

This is a saying I’ve used often throughout the years because life has shown me, time and time again, just how true it is.

People will take as much as you’re willing to give.

Not always out of malice.
Not even always with awareness.
But the truth is, the world rarely stops to ask if you’re okay with how much of yourself you’ve given away.
It just keeps taking. Your time. Your talents. Your energy. Your softness. Until there’s nothing left for you.

And if you’ve ever been the “strong one,”
the “go-to,”
the “I’ll handle it” person,
then you already know. People mistake your capacity for consent.

They see your grace and assume you’re not tired.
They see your calm and assume you’re not cracking.
They see your light and forget you need rest, too.

But every giver needs a gate.
Every soul needs a stop sign.
Not because you’re unkind,
but because you’re human.
And being whole should not come at the cost of being helpful.

So here's what I’ve learned, slowly and not without consequence:
If you don’t set the terms, people will write the rules for you.
And their version will always ask more than you can sustain.

These days, I give with intention.
I say no without guilt.
I rest without explaining why.
Because preserving my peace is not selfish. It’s sacred.
And I refuse to keep emptying myself to meet expectations I never agreed to.

So if this message finds you worn thin from the weight of overgiving, let this be your reminder:

Your worth is not measured by your output.
You are allowed to reserve parts of yourself for yourself.
And you owe no one an explanation for choosing peace over people-pleasing.

Protect your energy.
Honor your time.

until you finally decide to give to yourself first.
